Regular visitors to a 'warm home' in St Petersburg. After the fall of communism, JDC could not open soup kitchens in every city in the FSU and created this novel approach: the owner of a small apartment is offered the chance to earn income by feeding between 5 to 15 Jews in her/his home daily. These apartments become something like community centers. To qualify, one must have no living relative and receive very little in pension payments.

Mariam Lipovna was born in St Petersburg in 1911, when the Romanovs ruled from the Winter Palace and her father managed an enormous bank in the center of town. She lives on a broad boulevard lined with new restaurants and privately owned clothing stores. Mrs. Lipovna still occupies the same cavernous five-room flat she was born in eighty-nine years ago, only now, she lives a single room. Mariam receives food packages daily from the Hesed center.
