Memorial plaque inside the grounds of the Croatian run concentration camp of Jasenovac. During World War Two, a fascist puppet government of the Germans was installed and proceeded to expropriate all Jewish owned property in 1941 and 1942. Jews were then rounded up and the majority of them were sent to several Croatian run camps, where ___ died. Serbs were also killed in Jasenovac, and because of the continuing bad blood between Serbs and Croats, no reasonable estimate of victims can be bridged-- Serbs claim 600,000 Serbs were killed here, Croats claim 50,000. Western scholars put the figure closer to the Croatian figure, simply because in no other concentration camp that operating in Europe have so many been killed without specific industrialized infrastructure, which existed in Majadek, Sobibor, Belzec, Auschwitz etc. At Jasenovac, it was said Jews and Serbs were "thrown into the river." But there is no likelihood that more than a half million bodies could be disposed in such a way.

During World War Two, a fascist puppet government was installed, the Ustashi, who proceeded to expropriate all Jewish owned property in 1941. Jews were rounded up and the majority were sent to several Croatian run camps, Nova Gradiska, Djakovo and the largest: Jasenovac. Serbs and Gypsies were also killed in Jasenovac, and because of the testy relations between Serbs and Croats, no reasonable estimate of victims can be bridged-- Serbs claim 700,000 Serbs were killed here, Croats claim 25,000. Historians associated with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum estimates that the Ustashi killed between 330,000 to 390,000 Serbs, and of those, between 45,000 and 52,000 were murdered in Jasenovac. There is no reliable figure on murdered Jews. 40,000 Jews lived in Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegovina before the war, and 32,000 were murdered-- in Jasenovac, the smaller camps, and toward the end of the war, they were deported to Auschwitz.
